Palle Stevn, chief operating officer at MariCare, discusses the importance of healthcare technologies to maximise safety and comfort for care home residents and improve levels of care
It has been estimated that there are over 5,000 nursing homes and 12,000 residential care homes in the UK, with more than 426,000 vulnerable residents.1 As the number of care home residents rises and nurses become increasingly stretched to provide the excellent and bespoke care they require, there has long been a need for a logical and cost-effective solution. For healthcare environments, investing in technology is the answer.
Smart, forward-thinking technologies are popping up across various industries to help solve problems and are becoming more available and affordable every day. Providing care homes with effective technological solutions will mean that nurses and care home staff are better equipped with the tools they need to greatly enhance the quality of residents’ lives.
The introduction of smart technologies is something that care home residents are more than willing to embrace. In a 2013 review of smart home initiatives and their implementation, it was revealed that older adults would readily accept smart technologies in care homes and at home, as long as they were convinced that the solutions would help with their physical movement and independence.
